Add Flare With Ferns

If you have shady places in your garden where you are having trouble getting anything to grow, you might want to try growing ferns. Ferns are low-maintenance and an easy plant to grow.  Most are tolerant of the cold and heat so they are a great choice as a year round plant.  They typically require a moist, shady area to grow. However, most ferns don’t want to be waterlogged.  So it is best to mix the soil with compost such as pine bark or other organic matter to improve drainage.  Ferns typically range in height and width from one to three feet although some can reach as high as six feet tall.

If you need to add texture, green color or create a transition from a section of your garden to another, ferns are a great way to accomplish this.  The green foliage offers a delicate and airy addition to the landscape.  They work well in natural areas and as a companion plant for hostas, caladiums and liriope.  They are also great in hanging pots and planters if you want to add some flare to your porch or patio or if you just don’t have room for a garden.  A touch of fern greenery is great for brightening the mood and a welcome addition to a porch gathering or garden party.
